A Prince and a Saint

 Dear Students,
This week, you have several tasks to do!
In class today, half of you read about Raimondo di Sangro (Prince of San Severo), and the other half read about San Gennaro. You should make sure to note any new vocabulary words, and write a simple summary of the text in your notebook Now, you must do a couple of things:
1) find the Italian translation of the text you received in class, and check for errors in the original and in the translation. Do the texts match? Is the original information correct, or is the translation wrong? Take notes in your notebook so we can discuss these errors in class next week.
2) read the text that you did NOT receive in class, note down any new vocabulary words, and then write a short summary here on the blog (4-5 SIMPLE sentences).

Click below to go to the webpages:

Saint Gennaro is patron Saint of Naples. He was Bishop of Benevento and was beheaded on 19 September 305 AD, during the persecution of Diocleziano against Chistians. The blood of martyr was collected in two small phials by a woman called Eusebia. This blood is currently preserved in the Cathedral of Naples. Every year in May, September and December it liquefies. If the event occurs is a good omen; if it fails is a sign of impending disaster. This is the "Miracle of San Gennaro", a mix of faith and mistery, piety and devotion. We can say that Saint Gennaro is in the heart of all people of Naples.

Saint Gennaro is the official patron saint of Naples.
He has been a victim of the Christian persecution. In this day and age, on the 19th of September and sometimes on the 16th December there’s a tradition that’s been going on for quite a long time, it is called "Saint Gennaro’s Miracle". It is believed that the blood of the saint, which is now kept into a small glass, liquefies on this date, it’s been going on since 1389 and even if it attracts believers and scientists, no physics or chemistry laws are able to explain why this happens. Also this event and this miracle symbolizes the close relationship between the people and Saint Gennaro which is reconfirmed every time from the blood liquefies, sometimes it fails to liquefy and if it does, it means disaster

RAIMONDO DE SANGRO, PRINCE OF SANSEVERO
As you walk amongst the alleyways of the historical centre of Naples, a visit to the Chapel of Sansevero is a must. It is only a few steps away from the square of San Domenico Maggiore. In this place mystery and legend blend and transport the visitor into the fantastic world of Prince Raimondo de Sangro.
He became a prince at the age of seventeen, after inheriting the title directly from his grandfather.
Raimondo had a superb mind for his times: a man of letters and a scientist of insatiable curiosity . This gave rise to the Neapolitans nicknaming him the “wizard”.
In 1744, on the Prince’s own wishes, the Chapel was restored and embellished with various works of art. Today, it is best known for three of the statues which adorn it, the physical execution of which still remains a mystery. Two of them, including the very famous “Veiled Christ”, the work of the sculptor Sammartino, seem to be covered by veils of transparent marble, which is, however, homogenous with the marble of the forms beneath, while the third is covered by a marble net apparently added afterwards yet also perfectly homogenous with the statue. One of the hypotheses is that this is the result of a procedure invented by the Prince.
Among the Prince’s many inventions, the most noteworthy are an “eternal light”.
With his death, in 1771, the Prince took numerous secrets of his art with him to the grave.

seems really covered by a transparent veil, and is attributed to Giuseppe Sammartino, but,

according to the legend, the transparent veil was directly created by the Prince, with a process he

invented.

Prince Raimondo also devised an "eternal light" and the famous "anatomical machines". These

are two skeletons, one male and one female, with the arterial and venous circulatory system

perfectly preserved.

Prince Raymond died in 1771, and since then the legends on his alchemic activity grew up. It

was said that he would kill seven cardinals and their bones and skin were used to made some

chairs. According to another tale he also knew the secret to liquefy the clotted blood, as happens
