Lesson 6: Holidays

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter Holiday!

Of course, the subject of the lesson was 'HOLIDAYS' so here is the powerpoint presentation we looked at last week (AppLing6), along with some 'extra' information I added after class.
We also looked at your answers from past assignments, and tried to correct your errors as much as possible. People who were absent on Tuesday can pick up their 'corrected' answers next week.

Remember to look at all of the slides and answer all of the questions!
There is a special surprise for you in the presentation...so have fun!

If you are a 'non-frequantante, you should also read pp. 114-115 in the book "English for Cultural Heritage"

If I could go on holiday anywhere in the world I would go to a desert Island, maybe somewhere in the Pacific Ocean in order to keep silence and to not listen to any noise. I’d stay there for a week or two with the bare necessities, my little dog and my favourite book. I would spend my time there walking along the beach, playing with my dog, reading and listening to the wonderful sounds of the nature. I would have more time for thinking about the important things in my life and my priorities. This could be a real “reflective” holiday!

I'm twenty years old, and I think that travels are very important. I did only two trips out of the Italy: I went to Vienna and Barcelona. Both of this trips made me fell free and when I was in this cities I was becoming stronger hour by hour. The different cultures and traditions are very important to me and I'm very curious to know them. I think that for young people, travelling is very important, because in a different country, you finally know that your world (language, lifestyle, everyday life) isn't the only one. So, you start thinking in a different way, and your relationship with other person become different. You grow up. I want to travel for all my life.

If I went on holiday somewhere, I certainly would like to go to France. Even though I'm already gone there years ago, I would come back to spend more time and to see places that I couldn’t see. I was very young when I went there for the first time, but I have wonderful memories of that holiday. In particular, I would like to return to Paris to visit more carefully the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Musee d'Orsay, Musee National Picasso, Rodin Museum, Champs-Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe, the Musee des Gobelins, the Musée Marmottan Monet, Montmartre, and the various medieval and Gothic architecture typical of the city, including the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, Musee Cluny, the Sainte-Chapelle Gothic chapel of the thirteenth century. I also would like to go to Paris to visit Disneyland and I could enjoy together with my friends.
I hope that this desire is realized, in order to go as soon as possible!!!

The thing that I love most of all is art, so if I could go on holiday anywhere in the world, I would choose of course a country or a city full of monuments and museums. The city that especially I would like to see is Paris, because in my opinion is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I would like to visit the Tour Eiffel, the Louvre, the Van Gogh's museum and all of the beautiful parisian churches like Notre Dame and the Sacre Coeur. But Paris is also a very romantic city, so I would like to go on the bateau mouche on the Seine and take a walk in the Champs Elysée. Finally I would taste some typical french dishes and visit the famous Moulin Rouge to see the can can.

If I could take a trip somewhere, I'd go to Egypt! I would choose it because I'm fascinated by the history of this country and by the ancient and great civilization that developed here, along the banks of the Nile.
Of course, first of all, I would like to visit the pyramids.
There are 138 pyramids, discovered in Egypt as of 2008: for example the pyramid at Meidun, at Saqqara, the Red Pyramid at Snofru, the pyramid at Abusir. In particular I would to see the Pyramid at Giza, called Pyramid of Cheops, that is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis, and the Great Sphinx, a big statue that represents a Mithical creature with a lion’s body and a human head.
I would like to see also the Valley of the kings, a valley where there are the tombs constructed for the Pharaos. I would like to go here because I would like to see the tomb of Tutankhamun, that is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, and his funerary mask, conserveted in the Egyptian museum, in Il Cairo.
I hope to make this trip has soon as possible!!

If I could to go on holiday , I would go in Greece.
I would to visit in person this nation not only for museums , but also to learn about the traditions and culture of the site.
Greece has given western history and civilization, be italian comes from the thought and culture of the Greek philosophers who have passed.
In addition to classical Greece there is an Byzantine Greece, and one Greece testifies the presence to witnesses of the Venetians.
I would visit Athens, I would see the monuments and walking between old ruins of city,as "the Acropolis of Athens".
Beyond the extraordinary culture, the Greece has beautiful landscape as : the panorama and the islands lost in the sea.
I would like to see those white houses of Greece , the deep blue sea, I feel the clear light and the sun heat.
When I visit the locality I like to go at art sites, but I like visit also the natural wonders, in fact in the Greece there is the "Mounth Athos", and then learn about their traditions and cultures.
I would taste the local products as: the yogurt, the "Feta cheese", dried fruit...a original and genuine kitchen!
If I could to go , I would attend their partys; the famous festival with concerts, tragedy and dramas , Grek music and dance.

1) I would go on holiday to the U.S.A., expecially in New York. It is far from my town six hours by plain. I love New York for its skyscrapers, parks and large streets crowded of people. I would go on Liberty island where I could visit the Statue of Liberty; from which I can enjoy the landscape of the whole city. I would visit the place where the Twin Towers were destroyed. I’m curious to see and walk on the majestic Brooklyn Bridge. It is one of the biggest bridge in the world. It links Manhattan island with Brooklyn district.
I would visit New York because I am curious to see a big city like it, but at the same time I’m afraid because in these big cities there is a lot of crime.

The tourism can to be harmful to the landscape when it isn't controlled or organized because not everybody respect the environment and not all environments can support a large number of visitors. We must to control the tourism especially in places when the landscape is the only economic resource of the people.
The benefits resulting by a tourism organized and of the care of the landscape are many: economic development, social development and so on.

I love travelling. I think there is nothing more exciting than travelling, meeting new people, getting in contact with foreign cultures. If I had to go on holiday anywhere in the world, definitely choose the first half as the U.S.A. It is a place to dream, that everyone sooner or later in life would like to visit and learn. The U.S.A. is a magical land where everything seems possible. I'm really interested New York City. I would like to walk in Times Square in the middle of that multitude of people frantically running back and forth every day without fully enjoy what the most important square of their city has to offer. I would like to visit the MoMA, the most important museum in the world where every artist and art lover wants to spend an entire day getting lost in the magical and exciting paintings by Picasso, Dali, van Gogh. Then there is the huge statue of liberty overlooking Manhattan. There are many other things to see, the United States are immense and would not take a week's holiday to visit it all.

A particularly interesting place that I would love to visit is Japan. Japan has always fascinated me very much, both for its history of which only recently opened itself to globalization, both for its culture, so profoundly different from our culture. Different culinary cultures, different culture's way of dressing, way of thinking, of relating to another, different architecture, different relationship with your body, how can we forget the old geisha. A place so distant and different that I like to visit and study.

If I could choose a place to spend my holidays I will go to caribbean, to pass my days immersed in the total relax on the pristine and beautiful beaches, where reef barrier reigns. I chose this place because I love very much to stay in direct contact with the nature and for this reason I would like to do some excursions and practise water sports as sailboat. Moreover I would like to know the culture and traditions of this place, like the music because I'm an amateur singer.
I hope I will do this travel very soon!

I have traveled a lot in spite of my age, I saw almost all of Europe, I was in England, Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt. I like to travel and often do not do destination the problem for me because every place has something beautiful to discover or see. My dream trip is Japan, unfortunately, is a land very expensive and I have not had the chance to visit but I would have much pleasure to see it. Japan is a distant and mysterious land, full of colors and sounds very different from our country, probably this radical difference is the think that attracts me. Arrived in Japan to take a train and travel to all major cities, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka and I will eat only Japanese food.

I am a person who likes to travel. I think traveling is a great opportunity to meet new people, gain more knowledge and experience, and learn new customs and traditions.
I have heard much about the beauty of the East as well as the West, about the wonderful islands in the Pacific and also in the Atlantic. In short, the whole world seems to be full of beautiful places. The country that I would like to visit, however, is the United States of America.
My knowledge of the United States of America is derived from the geography and history books that I have read, the films that I have seen and the stories that I have heard from people who have visited this country.
The United States of America is a vast country with a mixed population. People from many different lands have come and settled here. This mixture of different races of people with different customs, religions, cultures and abilities have created a nation unique in history. Although this country has a very short history compared with that of the other large countries in the world, it is an example to the world of how people of different races could live together in peace and harmony.
The roads, buildings and cinemas here may be said to be the best in the world. There are many places and things of interest such as Hollywood, the United Nations building, Niagara Falls and the sky-scrapers.Even the natural vegetation and features are rich in variety. If one travels across the land, one will find different kinds of scenery in different places. Further, as the people here still follow their original customs and traditions, one will also have the feeling that one is passing through many different countries.

The holiday is a relaxing experience and "live" a place is the only way to forget the confusion and the problem of your life, It's like walking into a toystore! (for me, of course).

My ideal holiday would be to Florence, small and immense at the same time, an open air museum grown more beautiful over the centuries. I would stay in a smart and comfortable hotel near the Uffizi Gallery because it is the major Italian museum in Florence, one of the most popular and relevant in the world and itself a work of art. First of all, I would like to see the world’s best collection of works of the Tuscan school from Cimabue to Michelangelo, Giotto, Leonardo and Raffaello and above all Botticelli’s most famous work: The Spring. Then I would like to go to “Ponte Vecchio”, so I could see the famous shops there. In the 15th century these shops were greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers. But then perhaps because of their bad smell, Ferdinando I replaced them with goldsmiths, making the road more elegant and cleaner. I’m sure it will be a great holiday and I hope I’ll also make lots of friends there. I would like to go this summer.

2) If I could go on holiday with a famous person, I’d like to go to England with Paul McCartney, because I love his songs, especially when he was a member of The Beatles. I’d like to ask him everything about his Fab Four period: how he met the other musicians, why his friendship with Lennon dramatically ended, what inspired him to write his songs, if he ever plays The Beatles Rock Band video game.
Then it would be amazing, if he took me to all the most important places of his life: I’d like to visit the famous barbershop in Penny Lane (Liverpool), the house where he spent his childhood or the club where The Beatles first performed. But, most of all, I could die, if we crossed together the renowned Abbey Road!

I would like to see the skyscrapers, typical placet, Tokyo and Kyoto which seem to me very interesting cities.
Would also be interesting to go in a nightclub one evening,I found that there are different from italian cities; in Japan in the nightclub there are a little dance floor and there are many videogames.

To go in China has been my dream alway.
In particolar I would like to visit Pechino, the prohibit city;probably I was fascinated by this city because I saw in many films and I was struck by housing, costruction, local legends and songs.

I think that traveling is one of the best things in life.
It’s a way to stay in contact with different cultures, traditions and customs.
I think that isn’t a “beautiful” or “ugly” place, because every place has something special that sets it apart from others.
I usually go on holiday in the summer because it’s the only time I must not study!
I prefer art cities because I don’t like going on the beach, so I travel only for visiting!
My dream is to see every corner of the world, but I know it is difficult and very expensive enterprise. I give a lot of importance to food, because I think it is a fundamental characteristic of each population. In fact I always taste everything! I rarely go on holiday with my parents. I usually go with my boyfriend who always complain because he must carry my suitcase!

Answer to the 7th question:
I think that tourism could harm the local landscape, but I don't think that tourism is harmful to the development of local populations. My opinion is that it is necessary to increase tourism for the mutual enrichment of peoples knowledge of the people different from us, other places, makes us very rich and less alone. I cannot think that you can lock the tourism, but I think we need constant supervision to prevent damage to landscapes or works of art.

If I had enough money I would go to at Universal Studios in Hollywood.
The Theme Park have many attractions: the Studio Tour where you can watch the sets where hollywood movies are made like King Kong by Peter Jackson, War of the Worlds by Steven Spielberg, come face-to-face with Norman Bates at the legendary Bates Motel from Psycho, and much more. The rides and show from many important film like Jurassic Park, Revenge of the Mummy and a revolutionary virtual roller coaster of Simpsons. The Park is really huge but the map explain easily every places. I would choose a park in Hollywood rather than in Orlando because in L.A. there are so many places about cinema and many different art who attract me more, like hollywood boulevard and the walk of fame! HOLIDAY
I love to travel and the first thing I do when I'm in another country is visit the museums. I have spent days and days in the Prado Museum in Madrid to look at the paintings of Francisco Goya, at the Flemish old Masters and at the Pablo Picasso's Guernica. I love to stay long time in one place to know in more detail the people and their cultural expressions and their environment. Recently I've been to London for business and I enjoyed the evening with friends going to listen to good music in pubs. In London I went to visit the British Museum, The National Gallery and the Tate, as I used to do when I was a student. One day, not too far, I'd go to Africa, Kenya and Madagascar in contact with the uncontaminated nature.

The desire to explore new places and taste new flavours has always been something which has inspired me to travel. Most of the time. The most exciting holidays have been with friends where the only worry was extending the return date as much as possible. The unexpected was the order of the day. These have been the most beautiful holidays. There have also been many other holidays which involve pleasure and relaxation.

The holiday of my dreams? The holiday of my dreams would be in a long world tour at the discovery of the seven wonders of the world. Sincerely I could also happily spend a month in the Caribbean Seas. One month totally emersed by the nature would be exceptional. To fall asleep and wake up in that heaven, with the waves, woken up by the light breeze. To eat fish that I have caught myself. One thing only, surely I would do this only with the right company, few but marvellous friends. I believe it this would be my perfect holiday. And definitely an unforgettable holiday filled with memories which I would cherish forever.

Discover the traditions and culture of the countries visited is very important to respect and understand the behavior of the population.
You should then make a distinction between vacation and travel.
The holiday is a time of cultural exchange since it anyway leads us to assimilate the local traditions, food, clothes and festivity, it remains mostly careless moment of relax.
A travel conversely, it should be intended differently. It would be right, before starting, to investigate, studying, the culture of the area you plan to visit; to get prepared and ready for a total fusion with the people and the local folklore.
It’s important to be disposed to learn and, why not, make our minds of different ethnic groups.
Anthropology teaches us that to overcome the prejudices against other cultures must be willing to live like them. If we claim to understand a culture will never be regarded as lower as possible to understand their attitudes. Many things that us are actually unexplained at the base have always logical and reasonable explanation.

I would like to visit the town of Athene. It is a beautiful place with its monuments like the “Acropoli” or some temples that are in the city. The most beautiful place is the temple of Athena situated on the Acropoli and called Parthenon. Its name derived by the great statue of Athena Parthenos that was in the principal room of the temple. The Parthenon was restored because during the 1600 it was hit by a cannon during the war between the Venetians and Turks. The restoration has taken the temple to the beauty of the time of Pericle.

Mexico is rich in natural resources and is characterized by: deserts and tropical beaches but also in a very chaotic city. In addition, the natural landscape and human culture and traditions of Mexico reflects either indigenous and Spanish. Moreover, in Mexico there are more than fifty indigenous groups each with its own language culture and tradition.

Generally I love by far going on holiday everywhere in the world, but sincerely I prefer travel round and stay in different places during my holidays because I'm fascinated by finding out about the culture, the customs, the old traditions, the history, the museums and the way of life and comparing all the similarities and the differences.
I hate staying in one city or village also because I get bored of staying in the same holiday resort for a long time and visiting the same highlights several times. As I'm really curious, I like exploring many places as possible in my short hoiday time in order to select what places where I must absolutely return in!

I think of the finer things in life is travel.
After high school,I went with my friends on the island of Corfù in Greece, travel will always carry in my heart.
In particular I have been to Benitses, a short distance from Corfù, wich looks like a small town well-equipped that gives a peace of mind; the sea is beautiful and clear, the center is really nice and offers: shops, supermarkets, bars, taverns, and in the evening restaurants and pubs with great music and great food: wich typical dish is the pita.
Corfù is a Greek island in the Ionian sea, located off the coast of Epirus, on the border between Greece and Albania.
The city was founded under the name of Corcyra in 700 BC and entered history as a colony of Corinth in 733 BC
It for its location in the Mediterranean was first colonized by the Romans, then by the Bizantines, then by the Normans, and then it passed under Genoa, then under the Angevin, and then it passed to Venice from the fourteenth to eighteenth century.
The island has been the location of the film belongs to the saga of James Bond, agent 007.
If I could make a safe Journey back to Greece and as stages I propose: Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea. Then I will go to the villages most important: Filoti, Apiranthos, Tragea, Koronos, Sangri, Apollonas.
Naxos is in fact a popular tourist destination with many archeological sites, then I will surely go to the most beautiful beaches such as: St. Anne, St. Procopius, Alikos, Kastraki, Mikri Vlaga, Plaka, St. Giorgio, wich are located mostly on the western side of the island.
It is also the most fertile island of the Cyclades within wich stands the Mount Zas (1004 m).
Then I'd go to Keros is a Greek island Cyclades small uninhabitated and unknown to most of the italian people, but is among the most important for the wealth of artifacts archeology.
It was such in the past, a decree prohibiting the Hellenic state of domicile to Keros.
The edict remained in force was not sufficient to protect it from theft archaeological collections that have enriched both the private(especially in Germany and the U.S.) and to the collections of major museums around the world.
Keros is achieved preferably by Ano Koufonissi using private boats.
Then I'd go on Paros one of the largest islands of the Cyclades, situated in the Aegean Sea, famous for its white marble and for being the birthplace of the poet Archilocus.
It is now separated from Naxos, but united to it in ordinary language by the name of paronaxia.
Then I will go to Alonneso wich is an island of Greece with Sciato , Scopelo, and Sciro is part of the Northern Sporades.
The village of Rousoum has the most beautiful beach and most popular island and there are also several rental houses and along the coast then there is the village of Votsi wich is very quiet day and night and where you can admire the characteristic white houses with sea view, they are yellow ocher perched on the cliff.
Then I will come to Samothrace, wich is a Greek island located in the North Aegean Sea to North-coast of the island of Limnos, it is best known for the large sanctuary of Samothrace, from wich the famous Winged Victory Statue, known as Nike of Samothrace.
I believe that the exceptional climate, natural beauty, the blue of the sea, the archaeological sites and monuments of every kind, the highly developed resorts near the picturesque villages of Greece from the traditional colors make it the singular and unique, then one of the most beautiful places on earth!

If i would go on holiday anywhere in the world,i would go in California,in particular San Francisco. It is a land of great cultural vitality and architectural eclecticism with bildings of Victorian style and modern architecture. You can find famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge and oldest neighborhood Chinatown with palaces and monuments built according to Chinese architecture, famous is the port of entry called "port of the dragon".This city has always fascinated me to the musical environment that you can find. There's music everywhere, of every kind. It was the center of the hippie movement in the 70's and even today the hippie culture still exists, you can see from the psychedelic lights that illuminate the streets at night.
For all these features is considereted most "european"of American cities. If i had a little money i would start tomorrow!

If I could go on holiday with a famous person, I'd go with Fabrizio De Andrè. It would be nice to visit any place and hear them tell from his songs. I'd like to go to the beach and listen to the sound of his guitar and his voice. Any place would be wonderful to see through his eyes. It would be a very good holiday ... but unfortunately I can travel with him only in my dreams.

If I could go on holiday anywhere in the world, I would go to Sydney, in Australia. I've never been in this city, but I think that it is very beautiful, and for this reason I'd like to visit it. In Sydney I would relax with my best friends: we could go to sea, buy a souvenirs for our families, go to some discopub or bar in the night; we could admire the Queen Victoria Building, or the famous Opera House, and we could have a fantastic time together. For these reasons, I hope to visit this city in the future, although it will be a very expensive holiday!

If I could go on holiday everywere I want, certainly I would go to China. Since I was a child i was particulary interested by the chinese culture. I love to eat with the oriental tableware chopticks and I love chinese food.
If i went to China I would like to vist the great wall, who is the longest structure ever built, that crosses northen China. The great wall was constructed by hand and it can be seen from the moon.
The main popular religion is buddhism, as metter of fact in China there is the biggest buddha in the world, called " The grand buddha", and it is carved into a clif.
Moreover I would visit the temples, located in all the country, that give peacefulness and quiteness, differently to the chaotic city where I live.

If I could go on holiday everywhere, I would like to go to New Zealand. New Zealand holds a special place as a premier eco-tourism and outdoor adventure destination. It is also a great place for a relaxing holiday.
This compact country has a spellbinding landscape of emerald-green pastures, crystal-clear rivers, primeval rainforests, shimmering lakes, thermal wonderlands, towering peaks, grinding glaciers and spectacular fiords.
New Zealand has also a unique and dynamic culture. The culture of its indigenous Māori people affects the language, the arts, and even the accents of all New Zealanders. Their place in the South Pacific, and their love of the outdoors, sport, and the arts make New Zealanders and their culture unique in the world.

4) I prefer travel in different places instead of staying in one place. In fact I have always dreamt to make an "Interrail". In fact next summer holidays I was going to organize a beautiful Interrail with my almost brother in law. We had tought to visit: Vienna, Prague, (maybe again) Berlin (Beautiful city!), Luxemburg (he has some relatives there), and then a little digression to Bruges, because last year I've seen a beatiful movie titled "In Bruges - at phone with the killer"...and its location is just Bruges. I felt in love with this little city. It seems like a little Venice, but it remains in the middleage period, with its beautiful canals, and also houses!I believe that they are the same of six or seven centuries ago...I really think It. Then there is also a particular highest tower from which you could see all city closed in itself. Beautiful beautiful beautiful. After this little digression, we had tought to see Amsterdam, and in the end London. I think I'm fit for a interrail, the important thing is that I can always have a physical cleaning staff, this is really important for me (maybe because I'm a female!or simply Human!!!), I'm very phisically and psychologically strong! But in the end we have chose another place to go on this summer holiday, beacuse to make an interrail in different countries (not only one), we need so much money! And we need also so many days, not only 2 weeks, we really need at least a month's holiday. But, Dear Teacher, you made a wrong question, because one of my first dreams is to travel in all the world, so I could answer and talk to you for hour and hour and hour.......

If I could go on vacation anywhere in the world I would go to Egypt, because I'm very curious to see the pyramids and I would also visit the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
I really like making trips not only artistic, but also to relax! for example, I'd like very much to go on the island of Bora Bora. I really like it, especially for the sea, the Sun, but mostly I'm curious to see the water bungalows!
