Lesson 4: Conservation and Restoration

This week we discussed Conservation and Restoration, and the various 'issues' facing archaeologists, conservators, restorers and staff members at museums, libraries or archives of all types.
Take a look at this interactive feature from the site of the Getty Museum Research Department (it is on the right side: "Interactive Feature: Two approaches to vase-painting restoration")
http://www.getty.edu/museum/research/

We also used basic vocabulary to describe buildings and the things contained in them.
You will find the entire lesson here https://public.me.com/dpickens1

Don't forget to look at the furniture vocabulary, too - there is a surprise link for you to check out at the bottom of the list!

I think that the problem is: we want preserving or we want make the cultural heritage untouchble? What they do is a very long and hard work and they make it for preserving that historical treasure from rain, wind and sun light. If they didn't do what they did, maybe that beautiful masaic were be lost forever in few years. So the important, as my point, is preserving, for the Next generation, beacouse we are sons of our history!
In Italy someting of this can be do in pompei, the most important archeological site in the world, where the water has infiltrated in a lot of wall and, recently, much of this are destroyed forever.

I think the conservation project in north Africa is an excellent idea! Through the training program, including four phases (documenting the conditions of the mosaic, developing a treatment plan, implementing and recording treatment, regular inspection of the mosaic), archeological sites aren’t deprived of their significant elements, which help to increase the value of the sites themselves. In this way, they would be more interesting, attractive and impressive. But, above all, this project aids archeological sites “to keep their treasures and give them to the future generation in the best way”. Anyway, in my opinion, this plan is quite difficult to apply in Italy, least of all in Naples. To tell the truth, I find Neapolitans particularly unable to appreciate, enhance and take care of their own Cultural Heritage. Italian people are generally disinterested and quite regardless of culture and arts. But one size doesn’t fit all! I really hope one day things will change, because the best Italy can offer is yet to fructify.

Restoration is a practice used since ancient time but, during the Roman Emperor, the concept of restoration was intended as a reuse. An example is the Arch of Constantine that was built during the Adrian’s age and was altered in its structure and rededicated to new emperor Constantine by the senate for his victory against Massenzio.
Now the restoration is like conservation and protection of sculptures, temples or wall paintings with some interventions of maintenance. With the past of the time restoration has undergone an evolution in methods, materials and in the concept of restoration. Now restoration should not be intrusive and must be the criterion to distinguish the original from the false. In the past the restoring was much intrusive, an example is the Algardi’s Athena. The sculpture, when was founded, was a bust with no attributes for the recognition of the subject. When Algardi restored the sculpture in XVII century, he created a totally new sculpture of the goddess Athena. The restoration of Algardi is not correct because the sculpture of Athena is an idealistic representation of the artist and it is not represented the real forms of the original sculpture. The main problem of this type of restoring is not reversible and for this reason the statue can not be disassembled to retrieve the original body.

According to me, the African conservation project is an extraordinary idea, because this artistic and cultural initiative, with its four phases, aims at preserving the mosaics by a restoration-oriented action. These works of art, whereas, can be improved without change them to the original intent of the artist.
Indeed I think it helps to increase the value of the archeological sites and make them more interesting and remarkable!
Although I think this enterprise is really ingeniuos, but it is difficult to carry out in Italy. It would be useful, because the Italians have an huge cultural heritage but they don't take care enough of this one! They have to learn to make it more valuable and restore it, if it's necessary for the future generation!

In the north Africa, in Tunisia, there are many archaeological sites which come back to the Roman Empire. In these sites we can find ancient architectures and mosaics. The mosaics represent animals, Gods, cupids and mythological scenes. Many of these were brought to museums to preserve them, but in this way, nowadays archaeological sites have been disfigured of their works of art. Today restorers preserve mosaics in the archaeological site.
I think that through this system works of art, especially mosaics, remain in their original site and they can be appreciated in their own contest. Something like that would work in Italy especially in the Roman site of Pompei and Ercolano where the mosaics and paintings were brought to museums. When a tourist see the archaeological site without their mosaics or paintings, he can’t perceive the historical importance of the site.

Good evening,teacher!
The last lesson on the various problems of art, such as conservation and restauration, was very interesting!
I think that these processes are of the great discoveries modern, but must be made with competently and experience.
For example, some of the early restaurations of the past have done irreversible damages at many art's works, as sculptures and paintings of great artistic and historical value.
So, also the value of these works is diminished.
On the contrary, I think that these various processes, in particular these of restauration, can be never too much invasive, because with this action can lose the original subject and idea of the artist.
Today, with the figure of the conservative can give a good future for all art works, repairing the damage and injury of the time and these works preservation in the exellent conditions.
And this is very positive!

The work program developed in North Africa to preserve and maintain a mosaic is very interesting.
The work is divided into four phases: a) examination of the conditions of the mosaic; b) development of a program of actions, c) execution of works, d) checking the condition of the mosaic over time.
This working method is applied in Italy with excellent results, too. It keeps the originality of the work in accordance with the idea of the artist.
To preserve a work of art, I think it is very important to follow the teachings of William Morris: "prevention rather than cure ". To do that is necessary to make frequent interventions by works minimally invasive, approaches that do not require high costs, limiting the heavy restoration work often aggressive and very expensive.

Conservation e restoration of cultural heritage is an important and necessary work. Especially in a country like in an ours that is full of ancient monuments, pictures, books and so on.
Besides, the conservation project in North Africa is amazing!
Maybe in this way that places will be more interesting for the tourism.
Unfotunately, even if our country need a work like that, there isn't so much care. For example Naples has a so big cultural heritage but so many of that monument aren't conserved like they would be. But not only Naples!

I think that the work done in Tunisia was really interesting, a defence against the natural damages or sometimes, human acts. There's a real interest of restoration by the experts of the culture heritage. So, it's exactly what Italy needs! Someone who really cares about the arts and the culture, that manages them with care and expecially it needs funds for the realization of many project like this one!

The example of conservation of Tunisia's mosaics is very interesting.
This should make us reflect on the practices of conservation and restoration.
In Italy we are full of art works but most of these are in a poor state of conservation then should be given priority to their restoration to benefit from them.

To preserve the works of art need of restoration and protection. The italian state spends a little money for the culture. In Campania, there are many archaeological sites and many people are out of control illegal excavations. Without money and without controls for the protection and conservation many works are destined to disappear.

I think that conservation and restoration of cultural heritage are very important for the art, especially if the city have a important story and are visited.
I saw the video of conservation in north Africa,is very interesting and I think that is a good idea.

Italy is a nation rich of ”history”,museums and works of art.
Unfortunately in Naples, cultural heritage are not very protected, in some cases there is a little interest, in other is lack of money and it is a sin because I think that “Naples could live of tourism”.

Conservation and restauration are important especially for a country like Italy, which is rich in artworks; but today,in Italy, we don’t invest in conservation of cultural heritage… and unfortunatly a lot of monuments are damaged because our country doesn’t apply the preservation and conservation...we know what happened to Pompei some months ago.
We must invest more funds if we want to save our cultural heritage!

The work developed in Africa to preserve and conserve a mosaic is very interesting.
This method can also be applied in Italy to obtain good results.
In fact, Italy is rich in works of art and keep them alive is very important to our past and therefore our culture.
I think it is very important to conserve a work, rather than intervene with the restoration.
The restoration shall submit the artwork to increased stress and restoration is still being discussed for the removal of patina.
In fact, many interventions have failed, as the loss of their original colors.
I think it's best to keep before the restoration.
It 'better to do the first job and not wait for even more damage because the cost of storage is less than the restoration.
This method can be applied in Italy to prevent damage as it happened to Pompeii, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world!

Nowadays the conservator's work is guided by ethical standards. Ethical standards have been estabilished across the world and national and international ethical guidelines have been written. The tradition of conservation in Europe began in 1565 with the restoration of the Sistine Chapel frescoes.
Conservation-restoration also referred to as conservation, is a profession devoted to the preservation of cultural heritage for the future. Conservation activities include examination, documentation, treatment, and preventive care. All of this work is supported by research and education.
Conservation-restoration is in the hands of professional experts knwown as conservator who use chimical and scientific analysis for the examination and treatment of cultural works. The modern conservation use equipment such as microscopes, spectrometes, and x-ray machines to better understand objects and their components. Thanks to the conservator's work is possible to admire a wonderful cultural haeritage all over the world, otherwise the whole patrimony would have been lost!

The conservation of Mosaics in Tunisia, in my opinion, is really a great idea. Starting from the four main treatments: Check the condition of the mosaic, developing a plan of procedure, record the treatments and control the mosaic. I agree with Laura Fichera, when she says that, in Italy, the cultural heritage is very difficult to apply even if there are enthusiast and art lovers. The difficulty arises mainly beacause politicians say that there aren't money to spend for the culture, and maybe because Italy is considered a bit, like Greece, the real cradle of civilization and especially one of the first countries in the World considered perfect for the culture. And so paradoxically it is understimated because it is overrated. So, considering Italy perfect culturally as it is now, Our Country doesn't spend "that little money" for Cultural heritage.

I saw the movie on the conservation and restoration of the mosaics in North Africa and I think it would be a good idea to apply this technique of preservation even for Italy. In fact, tourists are attracted not only by museums, which are currently kept most of the mosaics and frescoes found for example in Pompei, Castellammare of Stabia and other archaeological sites, but also the historical and cultural context in which that work was found. But I realize that, to achieve such a project would take much more money than at present and this involves another realm which I believe is the foundation of any initiative.

Conservation is a fundamental activity of the J. Paul Getty museum and is an essential element of the mission of the museum, wich includes the acquisition, preservation, exhibit and interpret works of art.Within the collection are contained classical antiquities,European paintings, drawings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts and decorative arts, and photographs.
Some basic principles that form the basis of the conservation work of the Museum are:a)Prevention: it is important to avoid degradation and for this reason, the museum pursues an aggressive program of preventive conservation including climate control and environmental monitoring, design and media showcases, past managment, and storage, packaging, and shipping methods.
b)Reversibility: reversible even if no treatment is 100%,the goal of the museum staff is to come as close as possible to that standard.
c) responsibility aesthetic:the collection preserved in the museum, conservators help to make works of art for visitors to read, so you can see the art, rather than damage it.
As a result, most of the restorations are designed to be invisible to the naked eye in some cases it may be a balancing act using suggestive measures to make the work complete does not obscure the visual difference between the original work and the work restoration.
Mosaikon is a patnership comprising four institutions:the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Foundation,ICCROM(Centre for the study of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage) and the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics(ICCM).
It responds to the needs of conservation and managment of archaeological mosaics in the Mediterranean region through the allocation of resources into four components:1)Raising the professional network and exchange of information: 2)Mosaics in situ, 3) mosaics in museums and the conservation the same,4)University-level education for the conservation and training of trainers.
For centuries of cultural and artistic achievements, the Mediterranean basin is an area of active research archaelogical excavation among the most important resources of this region are the mosaic floors of classical antiquity.
The mosaics can be found either in their original context, as part of the decorative scheme of a building or in the inside of museums where they were tied after beig removed from their original site.
Unfortunately, when the mosaics are lifted and placed inside a museum, have lost valuable information.
Increasingly, archaelogists and restores have acknowledged the importance of preserving existing mosaics in their archaelogical contexts where students and visitors are able to understand their cultural values and their importance in the site.

The problem arises on how to do the restoration, there are repairs that need to work long and others short. We must restore the matter is that the "visual" work.
The task of the restorer is to bring the work in an optimal state, both for the viewer, both in structure and materials it is made. the decay process of the work is a natural process that in spite of our actions will always return to damaging the work. The only thing you can do is keep the best we can trying to delay as much as possible, its decay.

I think that the African conservation project is an extraordinary idea.
The deliberate act of keeping cultural heritage from the present for the future is known as Preservation or Conservation.
Cultural heritage is often unique and irreplaceable, which places the responsibility of preservation on the current generation. Smaller objects such as artworks and other cultural masterpieces are collected in museums and art galleries. Grass roots organizations and political groups, such as the international body UNESCO, have been successful at gaining the necessary support to preserve the heritage of many nations for the future. Conservation and restoration are very important especially in country like ours that is full of ancient monuments, pictures and books. But unfortunately our city is also careless to this, ignoring the importance of our heritage.

But the objective of we Italian is to protect the our cultural heritage.

I watched the film about the conservation project in north Africa and I found it very interesting. The mosaic pavements of classical antiquity found in the Mediterranean basin are some of the most extraordinary archaeological resources of this region. I agree with archaeologists and conservators that want to preserve the mosaics in their original context; in fact, visitors are better able to understand their cultural values and moreover they will be able to understand the original intent of the artist .On the contrary, when mosaics are lifted and placed within a museum, this valuable information is unfortunately lost. However, maintaining mosaics in situ requires measures that integrate conservation with site management, providing for the study and visitation of the site while preserving the integrity of the archaeological fabric. I think something like that would work in Italy, but we have a big problem…politicians say that there isn’t enough money to devolve to cultural heritage, unfortunately they don’t want to understand that if we don’t invest money in the restoration of our valuable cultural heritage, the most famous archaeological tourist attractions will be damaged and this kind of tourism will finish for ever.

CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION
It is not easy to talk about the restoration. Many discussions have found archeologists and experts disagree each other and the issues remain, in part, unresolved. There are different approaches to restoration and different way of thinking.
Viollet Le Duc (the restoration or manner) saied that the monuments, paintings and sculture had to be restored to its former splendor, with techniques and materials used in the age of the building = Integrated part should not be perceived.
For John Ruskin (Antirestoration movement) you should not do any type of intervention, but let the works bear witness also the time that passes = deterioration. For Camillo Boito (Philological restoration= recognition of the actions) the restoration is the respect of the addiction which have artistic value, protecting the signs of aging. There were heated discussions on the restoration of the Sistine Chapel in Rome (by Colalucci and others) and It would appear that the restoration has taken away the famous Michelangelo’s dry haze, compromising forever the plastic effect (Michelangelo was always a sculptor, even when he painted!)

The area of north Africa along the Mediterraneum was a part of Roman world.
In this country there are a lot of mosaics that have survived the centuries; they are an art which testifies the greatness of past artists.
Nowdays, the archaeologists are working to preserve the mosaics and they are creating some programmes (training programmes) to defend these mosaics by deterioration.
In order to guide the work of technicians, the programme includes four faces : documenting and assessing the condition of the mosaic; developing a treatment plan; implementing the treatment and finally there is the regular inspection of the mosaic.
All these passages are very important to reconstruct these past works and to give them to future generation in the best way.

I strongly believe that the African conservation project is an amazing idea. The project primarily focuses on four phases. These brilliant master pieces can be worked on, without changing or altering the artist’s style and overall intention. It would be a fantastic idea to instil such a project in Pompei. Especially as Neopolitans need to gain a respect, love and appreciation for their profound cultural heritage.

Such a project has the immense power of enriching the archaeological sites and therefore making them more impressive and astonishing. In accordance to this theory the mosaics remain in their original condition and can be appreciated for their artistic beauty and far beyond.

The conservation project described in the movie shows the four stages of moving of Roman mosaics from the Tunisian original sites of the Bardo Museum, where they currently are preserved. For centuries, the mosaics were removed from the sites with the erroneous pretext to want to protect.
It took twenty-efforts to promote conservation in situ without detachment, it was realized too late that the mosaics detach causes serious risks not only for the preservation of the material, but also for the loss of significance and the destruction of the environment Archaeological membership.
Keep the mosaics in situ is before an ethical problem and only technical success.
During the '60s and '70s in Italy are often transferred the mosaics in the museums, fortunately some of these are still being applied to other layers of the original mosaics; some mosaics been removed and reapplied conversely on the basis of reinforced cement.
Rest of the opinion that to keep and preserve well our story with our work should only improve maintenance techniques implemented without big changes (various detached) in the opera.

Most European citizens live in or around cultural heritage with which they identify closely because of the uniqueness and irreplaceable value of historic buildings, collections and sites for their tangible and intangible values. To preserve this huge heritage and restore the ancient works (pictures, archaelogical ruins, sculptures, frescoes…) It was born the figure of Restorer . But the question everybody ask is : How much restoration is enough? I think there isn’t an answer for all the cases but it is important ask always the question each other and keep alive the interest. I really appreciate the video about the African restoration and the effort made to maintain the mosaics’ original condition but I also think that in Italy we lost the love and the respect for the Arts and for ourselves cultural and historical baggage. So probably we need to restore earlier this sensitivity and after have a look around!

dictated by the taste of time. The restoration is an activity related to maintenance, recovery, restoration and preservation of historical artifacts, such as for example, architecture
a manuscript or a painting.
I saw the video of the project in North Africa and I think that is very interesting! The project deals with very important issues such as conservation and restoration.

I think that the work the restorers are doing for the Tunisia’s Mosaics is great! The application of this innovative technique will be able to leave the mosaics inside their “native environment” and to make the visitors appreciate completely the magnificence of the archeological sites. A mosaic in much more appreciable in its native environment instead of in a museum. Something like that could be done for the mosaics of Pompeii and Herculaneum and generally for all the roman “domus”. Personally I think that walking through the ancient Pompeii observing the mosaics’ vividness would be fantastic! Probably the possibilities that this could happen are the least. But WE MUST HOPE that one day (not too far) everyone will understand that the preservation and the care of the archeological sites create tourism and the tourism make the economics run. History can make us richer, in every sense.

Every town of the world has a particular cultural heritage to defende. And that is possible to do, thanks to the Restoration, but specially throuth a maintenance during the time.
However for this job we need not only economic resources, but a specialized staff too.
Naples has a wonderful cultural heritage that it could be enhanced but this responsability must be shared between employees and all of us, as citizen who love their culture and live for it.
