Lesson 7: Stop, THIEF!

Dear Students,
I have purposely waited to put this assignment online because I wanted to give you an opportunity to complete all of the other assignments. Therefore - this will be your last assignment for the semester.

Last week, we described five paintings which were stolen from a Paris Art Museum last year. Click here for an article, slideshow, and video about the crime.

We also read an article about museum security, and paid particular attention to the vocabulary regarding cultural heritage crimes.

The powerpoint presentation can be downloaded here, and the article we read in class can be found here.

For anyone who is interested, all of the information and statistics I presented in class can be found on the website of the Association for Research into crimes against Art (ARCA).

Students who are 'Non-frequentanti' should also read Unit 3 of the textbook, English for Cultural Heritage.

Feedback

Dear Students,
Please let me know what types of activities you have enjoyed the most in this class so far - ANONYMOUSLY - and send me your ideas for topics or activities you would like to study in the last couple of lessons. I am very interested in reading both your positive and negative comments, and I am especially interested in your ideas, so please give me some feedback.
Thank you.

Lesson 6: Holidays

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter Holiday!

Of course, the subject of the lesson was 'HOLIDAYS' so here is the powerpoint presentation we looked at last week (AppLing6), along with some 'extra' information I added after class.
We also looked at your answers from past assignments, and tried to correct your errors as much as possible. People who were absent on Tuesday can pick up their 'corrected' answers next week.

Remember to look at all of the slides and answer all of the questions!
There is a special surprise for you in the presentation...so have fun!

If you are a 'non-frequantante, you should also read pp. 114-115 in the book "English for Cultural Heritage"

Lesson 5: Famous Places

This lesson was based on some reading passages about famous places. They were primarily written in the passive voice, which we then studied.
We also spoke about international certification for English. Suor Orsola does not have a testing center, but here is a link to another place where you can take the exam at a good price! PET/FCE/ESOL CERTIFICATION

In addition to that news, I would like to call your attention to a program sponsored by UNESCO - they are looking for students just like you to participate in a Masters Program in Turin about World Heritage at Work. Click on it and check it out!

What is your assignment this week? Write about a famous landmark that is near your hometown, a try to use the passive voice a few times in your writing. I look forward to reading your work, as always!
(Also read the first comment to find out what to prepare for next week!)

Lesson 4: Conservation and Restoration

This week we discussed Conservation and Restoration, and the various 'issues' facing archaeologists, conservators, restorers and staff members at museums, libraries or archives of all types.
Take a look at this interactive feature from the site of the Getty Museum Research Department (it is on the right side: "Interactive Feature: Two approaches to vase-painting restoration")
http://www.getty.edu/museum/research/

We also used basic vocabulary to describe buildings and the things contained in them.
You will find the entire lesson here https://public.me.com/dpickens1

Don't forget to look at the furniture vocabulary, too - there is a surprise link for you to check out at the bottom of the list!

Lesson 3: The importance of museums

Do museums play an important role in your life?
This week we discussed artistic hobbies (see http://www.stickyball.net/writing/445.html for more practice) and the importance of museums.
We also tried to come up with some ideas for making museums more interesting for young people.
What are your best ideas? Download the lesson, write up your ideas, and post them here. Then, if you wish, you can also post your ideas to the New York Times - the link is in the lesson!
The powerpoint presentation (appling2) can be downloaded from the usual site https://public.me.com/dpickens1.

NON-FREQUENTANTI: In addition to the above assignment, read and do the exercises from Unit 10 MUSEUMS in English for Cultural Heritage, pp. 101-111.

Lesson 2: Describing Art

Wow - we had a lot of people in class this week! I am trying to get a bigger classroom, so check back here for news about where to go next week!

This week we learned a lot of new vocabulary for describing paintings. The powerpoint presentation (appling2) can be downloaded from the usual site https://public.me.com/dpickens1, and there is also another (much shorter!) presentation (appling2.1) which you must read. Follow the directions in the presentation for your assignment , which consists of watching a video, doing some quick web research and then writing to me here, on the blog!

NON-FREQUENTANTI: In addition to the above assignment, read and do the exercises from Unit 4 ART in "English for Cultural Heritage", pp. 41-50.

I am looking forward to reading your posts this week!
